I think I have to share this status update…CAUTION: I am not posting this because I dislike the trilogy, its readers, and whatnot; I am posting this because I love y’all with the love of the Lord and this is my view as a writer…
Even if readers try to avoid it, there is danger in reading the Fifty Shades trilogy. I have tried reading its third book before, not knowing what it actually contains and simply thinking that maybe, just maybe, the way it was written would help me improve my story-writing skills, but dang, it did NOT; hence, I stopped after a few chapters and deleted the PDF on my phone.
I have nothing against the book or the author, to be honest, I am actually one who tries her best to appreciate Literature because I love reading and writing. But I don’t want to have to compromise anything just because of whatever I am reading. As much as Music can be a tool for connecting to people and speaking a certain message, I believe that novels, poems, and the like could be either channels of blessings or instruments of temptations to readers depending on the choice of the authors as well. There are books that have wonderful plots and the like, but if something that’s not glorifying to the Lord is, let’s say, promoted in it, then I don’t think the book is wholly pleasing. I have read a number of works of fiction that have amazing plots and unpredictable plot twists, but one thing featured that is quite common in these books? Unfortunately, fornication. Does that glorify the Lord? Apparently, NO.
In the case of Fifty Shades, I don’t think the series encourages purity of the mind for its readers. It may have a nice plot, but I don’t think the plot was actually the one highlighted in the books’ entirety. Satan could attack our minds without our awareness because he knows that our thoughts could lead to actions. We may say that we are JUST reading the book, but reading could lead to fantasizing, fantasizing could lead to doing, and doing could lead to sinning. And to avoid that to happen, the key is this:
"Submit yourselves, then, to God. RESIST THE DEVIL, AND HE WILL FLEE FROM YOU."
- James 4:7
Want a wonderful book to read? The Bible. It’s the best. God bless y’all! :)
